A replacement strap needs more than the right width
Check both ends of the strap, its hardware and the exact watch reference before ordering.
Treat a replacement strap as a compatibility decision, not just a colour choice. Start with the exact watch reference and ask the supplier to confirm the attachment it supports. Lug width matters, but so do end-piece shape, spring bars or other hardware, strap length and the intended buckle or clasp. A “universal” label cannot answer all of these questions.
Two Hamilton references make the distinction clear. H69439931 lists a 20 mm lug width and a 20 mm buckle width. H70455533 also lists 20 mm between the lugs, but its buckle width is 18 mm. The same case-end measurement therefore does not mean the same buckle-end measurement. Check both ends if you intend to reuse a buckle.
Ask whether the supplied hardware is appropriate for the case, whether a shaped end will clear it and whether the adjustment range suits your wrist. Include the clasp type in that discussion; dimensions alone do not establish mechanical compatibility. If the answer is uncertain, ask a qualified fitter rather than forcing parts into position.
Before wearing, have the attachment checked for secure engagement and retain the original parts. Read the strap manufacturer’s care instructions separately from the watch’s case rating. Keep a record of the purchased strap reference and fitting details so a future replacement starts from confirmed information.
